Golden Globe Nomination Predictions
Every year pundits and film buffs try to guess who is going to get nominated for the Academy Awards. Once it gets closer to those awards, the minds at this site will sit down and try to do the same.
Hardly anyone sits down to predict the Golden Globes because to be honest, it's a fools errand. After all this is the nominating committee that, other than the Razzies, had the cajones to nominate The Tourist. While I have not seen all of the films, I am not one to shy away from the challenge! So here we go!
Best Motion Picture, Drama
A Star is Born
BlacKkKlansman
Black Panther
First Man
If Beale Street Could Talk
Could Sneak In:Widows
Surprised to not see Roma here? Turns out since it qualifies for Best Foreign Language Film, it can't be nominated here. That allows some other films like First Man to squeeze in.
Best Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy
Crazy Rich Asians
The Favourite
Green Book
Mary Poppins Returns
Vice
Could Sneak In: Eighth Grade
What a fun category. The one good thing about the Globes separating out the categories is that is allows movies like Crazy Rich Asians to be nominated. Green Book is about as much of a comedy as The Martian was in 2015. I guess Universal thought they would have a better shot in this category instead of drama. All that does is keep Eighth Grade from joining the party.
Best Director
Alfonso Cuaron- Roma
Bradley Cooper- A Star is Born
Barry Jenkins- If Beale Street Could Talk
Spike Lee- BlacKkKlansman
Yorgos Lanthimos- The Favourite
Could Sneak In: Peter Farrelly- Green Book or Damien Chazelle- First Man
This very well could be the five names we hear called Oscar night. This is actually one of the categories I feel most confident in.
Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture, Drama
Glenn Close- The Wife
Lady Gaga- A Star is Born
Melissa McCarthy- Can You Ever Forgive Me?
Viola Davis- Widows
Yalitza Apirico- Roma
Could Sneak In: Nicole Kidman- Destroyer or Toni Collette- Hereditary
Many of these are to be expected, and that makes this group of nominees kind of boring. I fear if anyone loses out it will be Melissa McCarthy which is a shame because she turned in her best performance.
Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy
Constance Wu- Crazy Rich Asians
Elsie Fisher- Eighth Grade
Emily Blunt- Mary Poppins Returns
Lily James- Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again
Olivia Colman- The Favourite
Could Sneak In: Kathryn Hahn- Private Life or Regina Hall- Support the Girls
Another fun category! While Colman is the front runner, it will make me smile if both Constance Wu and Elsie Fisher both get nominated here. They were phenomenal and deserve it.
Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture, Drama
Bradley Cooper- A Star is Born
Ethan Hawke- First Reformed
John David Washington- BlacKkKlansman
Rami Malek- Bohemian Rhapsody
Ryan Gosling- First Man
Could Sneak In: Willem Dafoe- At Eternity's Gate
John David Washington gave a career making performance and will remind voters that he deserves to hear his name called like the others in this category. Also, Ethan Hawke gave a career best performance in First Reformed so he is also on here just to hear his name called.
Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy
Christian Bale- Vice
Lin-Manuel Miranda- Mary Poppins Returns
Robert Redford- The Old Man and the Gun
Ryan Reynolds- Deadpool 2
Viggo Mortensen- Green Book
Could Sneak In: Nick Robinson- Love, Simon
Since he is retiring, Redford will probably get a nomination here for his presumed final performance. Ryan Reynolds is a curveball as is Lin- Manuel Miranda. There is a lot of praise for the film and he will more than likely be swept up in it. Plus let's be honest, you can't hate on the guy. He works hard and is super likable.
Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role
Amy Adams- Vice
Emma Stone- The Favourite
Michelle Yeoh- Crazy Rich Asians
Rachel Weisz- The Favourite
Regina King- If Beale Street Could Talk
Could Sneak In: Claire Foy- First Man
Many voting bodies will throw in their curveballs in the supporting acting categories. Michelle Yeoh is that curveball. On top of that she totally deserves it.
Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role
Adam Driver- BlacKkKlansman
Mahershala Ali- Green Book
Richard E. Grant- Can You Ever Forgive Me?
Sam Rockwell- Vice
Timothee Chalamet- Beautiful Boy
Could Sneak In: Sam Elliott- A Star is Born or Michael B. Jordan- Black Panther
I really hope Adam Driver pulls off this nomination. He's been severely underrated and is quite good in the film. I feel like many will put Sam Elliot in his slot but I just don't see it.
Best Screenplay
Charlie Wachtel & David Rabinowitz and Kevin Willmott & Spike Lee- BlacKkKlansman
Deborah Davis & Tony McNamara- The Favourite
Paul Schrader- First Reformed
Barry Jenkins- If Beale Street Could Talk
Adam McKay- Vice
Could Sneak In: Nick Vallelonga & Brian Hayes Currie & Peter Farrelly- Green Book
Paul Schrader is the wild card here and it would be awesome to see him get this nomination. He has already started to pick up awards so that really boosts his chances.
Best Original Score
Terrence Blanchard- BlacKkKlansman
Ludwig Göransson- Black Panther
Justin Hurwitz- First Man
Nicholas Brittell- If Beale Street Could Talk
Alexandre Desplat- Isle of Dogs
Could Sneak In: Michael Giacchino- Incredibles 2 or Hans Zimmer- Widows
I think people have forgotten how unique Ludwig Göransson's score really was. It felt very personal to the film and was unlike anything I had heard before. That made it stand out among an otherwise boring category.
Best Original Song
"Shallow"- A Star is Born
"All of the Stars"- Black Panther
"Revelation"- Boy Erased
"Ashes"- Deadpool 2
"Gravity"- Free Solo
Could Sneak In: "Suspirium"- Suspiria or "Hearts Beat Loud"- Hearts Beat Loud
I honestly don't know how many songs will end up nominated. And I honestly don't care. How awesome would it be if "Ashes" or "All of the Stars" knocked off "Shallow"?
Best Motion Picture, Animated
Incredibles 2
Isle of Dogs
Mirai
Ralph Breaks the Internet
Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse
Could Sneak In: The Grinch
An oddly exciting group of potential nominees. Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse is a sneaky one here and actually could have a decent shot at knocking off Incredibles 2.
Best Motion Picture, Foreign Language
Everybody Knows
Cold War
Happy as Lazzaro
Roma
Shoplifters
Could Sneak In: Burning, Border, Sunset, Girl, Capernaum
I really hope Border or Burning can sneak in. It's bizarre and the Foreign Press likes to nominate outside the box. This group of nominations looks pretty set in stone.
And that's it! Check back to see how many I correctly predicted when the Golden Globe nominations are announced on December 6th.
