Late To The Party: Vets Saving Pets

Do you ever stumble upon a piece of media and wonder, “How has this not been in my life before now?” Every other Friday, I will be bringing my belated discoveries to you.

I love dogs. This is something that most people who meet me discover. I spend most of my time talking or thinking about my 7 year old yorkie. I would do anything for him. So when I discovered Vets Saving Pets, I was immediately on board. Vets Saving Pets is a part of NBC's The More You Know programming. It follows the pets brought in to the specialists at the Veterinary Emergency Clinic (which must be in Canada based on their accents). Each episode features a few different pets who needed to be treated. Most of the patients have been dogs, although there are a couple of cats. They often require surgery, which you can tell is scary for the pet parents. So far, I'm on episode 4, the animals have all been alright in the end. It's fascinating seeing all of the different specialists: dentists, neurologists, cardiologists, and ophthalmologists, all for animals.

It's a little heartbreaking seeing the pets under anesthesia, lying on the table with their tongues hanging out. There was one yorkie that was especially heart wrenching for me, because it looked so similar to mine. On one episode, they help a lion with a tooth problem. It is wild (forgive the pun) to see a creature so gigantic, looking so helpless. There’s usually at least one pet owner who cries each episode but it’s easy to be empathetic if you’ve ever had a pet.

Something else that I noticed while uploading the picture for this post, is that most of the doctors (some not pictured) are women. It's wonderful to see women in S.T.E.M. careers, especially in a somewhat educational setting (as The More You Know is designed to be.)

If you want to spend a few hours seeing cute pets become even cuter (because they're feeling better), the 22 episode first episode is available on NBC.
