Tyler's Golden Globe Predictions 2020

With the Golden Globe winners set to be announced this Sunday, I thought I would try to guess who/what the Hollywood Foreign Press will be awarding the trophies to. I will be guessing what will win, but also putting in my two cents about what I feel should win.

BEST MOTION PICTURE – DRAMA 1917 The Irishman Joker Marriage Story The Two Popes

What Will Win: The Irishman

What Should Win: Marriage Story

I know I'm in the minority but I only find The Irishman to be an ok movie. It's very drawn out and for long stretches felt like nothing was actually happening. I applaud Scorsese for getting it made finally, but to me it doesn't live up to the hype. I digress. Of the movies nominated, Marriage Story deserves the win. It's filled with fantastic performances and packs an emotional wallop.

BEST ACTOR – DRAMA Christian Bale - Ford v. Ferrari Antonio Banderas- Pain and Glory Adam Driver- Marriage Story Joaquin Phoenix- Joker Jonathan Pryce- The Two Popes

What Will Win: Adam Driver- Marriage Story

What Should Win: Adam Driver- Marriage Story

Joaquin Phoenix is the best thing about Joker but I don't think he will win here. Adam Driver is flat out amazing in Marriage Story and it's the best role he has had in a career filled with them. Keep an eye on Antonio Banderas here for a curve ball.

BEST ACTRESS – DRAMA Cynthia Erivo- Harriet Scarlett Johansson- Marriage Story Saoirse Ronan- Little Women Charlize Theron- Bombshell Renee Zellweger- Judy

What Will Win: Renee Zellweger- Judy

What Should Win: Saoirse Ronan- Little Women

To be honest, it's Renee's award to lose at this point. Saoirse Ronan continues to be such a dynamic actress and will no doubt win an acting award at some point down the line, but this is where it should be.

BEST MOTION PICTURE – MUSICAL OR COMEDY Dolemite is My Name Jojo Rabbit Knives Out Once Upon a Time in Hollywood Rocketman

What Will Win: Once Upon a Time in Hollywood

What Should Win: Knives Out

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is a good movie. I liked it a lot when I first saw it but it has faded into a distant memory with all the good movies that have followed. I have seen Knives Out four times and have enjoyed it every time because I discover something new about it with each viewing. Hollywood loves movies about itself and they love Tarantino, which is how it edges out Knives Out.

BEST ACTOR – MUSICAL OR COMEDY Daniel Craig- Knives Out Roman Griffin Davis- Jojo Rabbit Leonardo DiCaprio- Once Upon a Time in Hollywood Taron Egerton- Rocketman Eddie Murphy- Dolemite Is My Name

What Will Win: Leonardo DiCaprio- Once Upon a Time in Hollywood

What Should Win: Taron Egerton- Rocketman

DiCaprio pretty much has this locked up at this point. Despite late comers Daniel Craig and Eddie Murphy entering the picture, people have been raving about his performance. He's good in the film but it's not one of his best performances, although I applaud that it's not showy like some of this others. Taron Egerton turned in a fantastic performance and honestly acted circles around last year's winner Rami Malek. It's a shame Egerton isn't in more discussion for awards.

BEST ACTRESS – MUSICAL OR COMEDY Awkwafina- The Farewell Ana de Armas- Knives Out Beanie Feldstein- Booksmart Emma Thompson- Late Night Cate Blanchett- Where’d You Go Bernadette

What Will Win: Awkwafina- The Farewell

What Should Win: Awkwafina- The Farewell

As much as I want to give the award to Ana de Armas, I favor Awkwafina's emotional and stunning turn in The Farewell. It's my favorite film of the year and the comedienne was the film's anchor. I'd be happy for either though!

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR IN A MOTION PICTURE Tom Hanks- A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood Al Pacino- The Irishman Joe Pesci- The Irishman Brad Pitt- Once Upon A Time In Hollywood Anthony Hopkins- The Two Popes

What Will Win: Brad Pitt- Once Upon A Time In Hollywood

What Should Win: Tom Hanks- A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood

It's a toss up between Pitt and Joe Pesci for the win. Of those two, I would prefer Pesci but I think Pitt ekes out the win. However, my pick for what SHOULD win is Tom Hanks in A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood. What could have been a distraction, having a mega star play Fred Rogers, turns into its greatest asset and Hanks embodied Mr. Rogers with the same warmth and humanity as the real life Mr. Rogers.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS IN A MOTION PICTURE Annette Benning- The Report Margot Robbie- Bombshell Jennifer Lopez- Hustlers Kathy Bates- Richard Jewell Laura Dern- Marriage Story

What Will Win: Jennifer Lopez- Hustlers

What Should Win: Laura Dern- Marriage Story

What's it going to take for Laura Dern to win an award on the film side? She's such a dynamic actress and has some of the best moments in the film. Jennifer Lopez is very good in Hustlers but I don't think it was an award winning (or even nomination) worthy performance. The fact that she has done so many romantic comedies helped people forget how talented of a dramatic actress she was and Hustlers "surprised" a lot of people.

BEST DIRECTOR Bong Joon Ho- Parasite Sam Mendes- 1917 Quentin Tarantino- Once Upon A Time In Hollywood Martin Scorsese- The Irishman Todd Phillips - Joker

What Will Win: Martin Scorsese- The Irishman

What Should Win: Bong Joon Ho- Parasite

Scorsese has a lot of favor in Hollywood and his return to the Gangster epic has reestablished him as one of the best directors in the business, even after the box office flop Silence. However, Bong Joon Ho has created a film so rich, both visually and in story, that it still has people talking. That gives him the edge in my book.

BEST SCREENPLAY Noah Baumbach- Marriage Story Bong Joon Ho and Jin Won Han- Parasite Anthony McCarten- The Two Popes Quentin Tarantino- Once Upon A Time In Hollywood Steven Zaillian- The Irishman

What Will Win: Quentin Tarantino- Once Upon A Time In Hollywood

What Should Win: Bong Joon Ho and Jin Won Han- Parasite

See the above. The story in Parasite is so well layered it has many different interpretations. But Hollywood loves Tarantino and he made a movie about Hollywood. That gives him a huge advantage.

BEST ORIGINAL SCORE Daniel Pemberton- Motherless Brooklyn Alexandre Desplat- Little Women Hildur Guðnadóttir- Joker Thomas Newman- 1917 Randy Newman- Marriage Story

What Will Win: Hildur Guðnadóttir- Joker

What Should Win: Thomas Newman- 1917

The score in Joker is impressive and helps set the mood for the film. Same for Thomas Newman with 1917 but I think the HFP will want to honor Joker in some way. And this is a place where it would be deserved.

BEST ORIGINAL SONG “Beautiful Ghosts” – CATS “I’m Gonna Love Me Again” – Rocketman “Into the Unknown” – Frozen 2 “Spirit” – The Lion King “Stand Up” – Harriet

What Will Win: “Into the Unknown” – Frozen 2

What Should Win: “I’m Gonna Love Me Again” – Rocketman

The HFP won't be able to resist giving it to Frozen 2. I would give it to Rocketman, as I kept humming that song for months after I saw the film.

BEST ANIMATED FEATURE Frozen 2 The Lion King Missing Link Toy Story 4 How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World

What Will Win: Toy Story 4

What Should Win: Toy Story 4

It's Disney vs Disney here between Toy Story 4 and Frozen 2. I, shamefully, haven't seen either but I have heard people talking more about Toy Story 4 and Frozen 2. Yep, that's the end of my "analysis"

BEST FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM The Farewell Les Misérables Pain and Glory Parasite Portrait of a Lady on Fire

What Will Win: Parasite

What Should Win: Parasite

It was tough to not put The Farewell or Portrait of a Lady on Fire here for either "Will Win" or "Should Win". Including Parasite, all three deserve it in my book and I would be happy with any of them winning. Parasite has the edge as it continues to perform strong despite being in theaters for three months.

And there you have it! Check back Monday, Jan 6th to see how I did!
